Panic Room Stops Somali Pirates From Seizing Beluga Fortune
A cargo vessel owned by a German shipping business, the Beluga Fortune, was obstructed from its route through the ocean on which it floated by criminals from a region on the horn of Africa called Somalia, which would make those who stood in the way of said vessel Somali pirates, technically speaking. Barely a day passed before the buccaneers abandoned vessel. The would-be hijackers were evidently disappointed the crew had been controlling the vessel from a panic room which they couldn’t locate. A state of lawlessness in Somalia has led to an epidemic of piracy that has peaked in 2010.
Beluga Fortune beset by pirates
There were some Somali pirates who assaulted the Beluga Fortune as it was on its way from the United Arab Emirates to South Africa. The Associated Press reports the buccaneers grabbed the vessel about 1,200 miles east of Mombasa, Kenya. According to Reuters, all of the 16 men in the team locked themselves in a panic room that had been there for times like this after sending out a distress call. From the room, the crew shut down the engines, cut off fuel and disabled the bridge.
Buccaneers peeved by panic room
Somali pirates have been frustrated by a panic room before, in Sept through the seizure of the German Freighter Magellan Star. American soldiers freed the vessel only 22 hours following it was taken, accounts Spiegal Online International. The team went into a room that had been hard to discover and harder to break into called a safety room. The room had all the supplies and equipment needed. There had been also food and drink in there. The ship’s owners were in contact with the captain. A satellite phone made this possible. Also, if there had been a need for the men to abandon ship, there had been a secret emergency exit. A spokesman for the Magellan Star’s owner told Spiegal “the pirates called our shipping company in desperation, wanting to know where the team was.”
The Somali buccaneers
The Somalia govt collapsed in 1991 which has left shipping off the country’s coast very difficult with Somali pirates. According to the European Union Naval force, Somali pirates are at the moment holding 19 ships and 428 hostages. 44 percent of the pirate attacks in the last year have come from the Somali buccaneers, reports the Strategy Page. There has only been one death this year for a team member. 27 others have been injured though. A total of 773 sailors have been held for ransom.
